2018 Hyundai Sonata vs 2018 Toyota Corolla at Hilton Head Hyundai near Bluffton

The Hyundai Sonata Takes on the Toyota Corolla

With seven stellar trim levels, a ton of great features, three gas engines, and two hybrid engines, the Hyundai Sonata sedan has a lot to recommend itself. Here at Peacock Hyundai Hilton Head in Hardeeville, the Sonata is one of our favorite, versatile models.

As great as we know the Hyundai Sonata is, we also understand that the market for similar sedans can be crowded here in the greater Savannah area. However, despite the stiff competition, we still think the Sonata comes out ahead of other sedans in a number of key areas.

Take the Toyota Corolla, for example. Both the Sonata and the Corolla are four-door, five-passenger sedans. But, as you'll see from the research we've put together here, the Sonata offers a lot more for Bluffton and Garden City drivers than the Corolla.

The Hyundai Sonata vs. the Toyota Corolla

  • Space. While both the Hyundai Sonata and the Toyota Corolla are similarly sized, with four doors and seating for five people, the Sonata allows more breathing room for you and your passengers than the Corolla. That's because the Hyundai Sonata's overall measurements are a few inches taller, wider, and longer than the Corolla.
  • Cargo storage. You can carry more of your gear with you when you drive a Hyundai Sonata. In fact, the trunk for the Hyundai Sonata can hold more than 16 cubic feet of cargo, while the Toyota Corolla only holds 13 cubic feet.
  • Standard features and amenities. The Sonata is yet another example of how hard it is to beat Hyundai for luxury-level, standard tech features at all levels. The Hyundai Sonata comes with a long list of high-end features right at the base level, including automatic headlights and power-folding side mirrors. The Corolla meanwhile, doesn't offer this level of creature comforts at the base model, and drivers are forced to spend more money to get the same features.
  • Hybrid options. For Hilton Head Island and coastal drivers who prefer their sedan with the gas-saving, emissions-reducing technology of a hybrid, the Hyundai Sonata is the only choice over the Toyota Corolla. Hyundai offers not one, but two hybrid engines for the Sonata. There's a traditional hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The Toyota Corolla, on the other hand, doesn't have a hybrid in its lineup.
  • Performance and power. The Hyundai Sonata gives drivers more oomph and a smoother ride than the Toyota Corolla. In fact, despite the fact that both sedans are equipped with a similar four-cylinder engine, the base model Sonata puts out 185 horsepower, compared to the base Corolla's 132 horsepower. Plus, the Hyundai Sonata comes paired to a smooth and responsive six-speed automatic transmission, while the Corolla has a continuously variable automatic transmission.
  • Fuel capacity. The Toyota Corolla and the Hyundai Sonata earn similar fuel economy ratings, both on city streets and on the highway. However, the Sonata holds a larger gas tank than the Toyota Corolla. In fact, the Hyundai Sonata gas tank holds five and a half gallons more fuel than the Corolla, meaning fewer refueling stops for you.
