Hyundai's Luxurious Sedan Takes on the Competition

At Peacock Hyundai Hilton Head we aim to make our customers' car-shopping experience as easy and painless as possible. That's one of the reasons why we've done our homework for you. We've taken some of our favorite Hyundai cars and put them head-to-head against a similar model from a competing car company.

Here, you can find our research comparing Hyundai's luxury-level, mid-sized sedan, the Sonata, to the competition. We think you'll agree that the four-door, five-passenger Hyundai Sonata, with its multitude of standard features, comes out ahead in this contest.

The Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata comes in your choice of engine types and sizes. Not only do you have an option of either a gas-powered, traditional sedan Sonata, but there's also a hybrid version and a plug-in hybrid version you can choose. The gas engine Sonata is available in an array of trim levels, including:

  • Sonata Base
  • Sonata SE
  • Sonata Sport
  • Sonata Eco
  • Sonata Limited
  • Sonata Sport 2.0T
  • Limited 2.0T

Drivers shopping for a gas-powered Hyundai Sonata have three engine options available to them as well. There's a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that offers 185 horsepower on the base, SE, Sport, and Limited trims. Then, there's a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower for the two 2.0T models. Finally, there's a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder equipped on the Eco trim.

The Hyundai Sonata vs. The Kia Optima

Both the Kia Optima and the Hyundai Sonata are four-door sedans and both are available in either a gasoline engine, a hybrid engine, or a plug-in hybrid engine. But, that's just about where the similarities end.

Here, we have looked at the nitty gritty details of both models, and put together this side-by-side comparison for you. We hope this little bit of homework helps make the decision-making process easier for our customers throughout the Bluffton and Hardeeville area.

  • Trim options. The Kia brand car only offers drivers a choice between five trim levels. The Hyundai, meanwhile, has more trim levels to choose from, plus they have more standard amenities and features than the Kia model.
  • Features. The Hyundai Sonata comes with more technology features standard than the Kia Optima. In fact, some features, such as heated mirrors, which come standard on even the base trim Sonata, have to be ordered in special add-on packages for the base trim Optima. You have to special order and pay more money to get the same features that you get standard in the Hyundai Sonata.
  • Fuel economy. Both the Sonata and the Optima have the same exact size gas tank - 18.5 gallons. However, the Hyundai averages better fuel economy on the same tank of gas, with the base Sonata averaging 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.
  • Passenger comfort. The Hyundai-brand car is wider and taller than the Kia, translating to more space inside the cabin for passengers, including more headroom. Plus, like all Hyundai cars, the Sonata is crafted with premium materials and high-quality insulation, making for an extremely quiet and comfortable ride.
  • Cargo storage. The Hyundai Sonata's trunk is larger than the Kia Optima's. The Hyundai Sonata trunk can hold more than 16 cubic feet of cargo, so you can carry a lot of stuff with you when you leave home.
